About Hotel Utano Kyoto Bessho
Even by Kyoto’s lofty standards, Hotel Utano Kyoto Besho is something special. The setting is Ukyō-ku, where the mountains meet the northwest corner of the city — a place known for its tranquility and its natural beauty, and for centuries an escape from urban life. The house itself dates back to the early 20th century, and is a historic example of its era’s hybrid Japanese-Western style, complete with a lush Japanese garden. Inside you’ll find a wealth of traditional Japanese construction styles and methods, as well as ten bedrooms — some in the shoin-style main house or the sukiya-style annex, others in the Spanish-inspired wing. Each room comes with its own hot spring–fed onsen bath, open to the garden breeze. And in a handsome, classically styled dining room, lit softly by washi paper, guests are served breakfast and a gourmet dinner featuring Awaji Island seafood.
