About Taniya
Staying overnight at Taniya, located in the historic castle town of Takayama, is akin to sleeping at Fallingwater or another architectural landmark. Positioned beside the Kusakabe Family Residence, an old merchant’s house designated an Important Cultural Property, this century-old inn is an extension of its notable neighbor, both showcasing ancient Japanese techniques carried out by local craftsmen. The residence functions like a museum, while Taniya is a traditional two-story wooden townhouse with clay walls, earthen floors, decorative shoji screens, finely made tatami mats, and a cypress bath overlooking a quiet courtyard. Since the property is rented out in its entirety, guests have exclusive access to the house’s peaceful tea room, an elegant wood-lined kitchen, and a stylish reading room with sculptural furniture made by a local artisan.
