About Machiyado Ichiryu
About two hours from Nagoya, the relatively remote Takayama City is prized for its mountain location as well as its picturesque traditional buildings. Behind one of the town center’s well-preserved façades — that of a classic two-story machiya townhouse — is Machiyado Ichiryu, an urban ryokan that takes some welcome liberties with the genre. A city-center ryokan isn’t unheard of, but more unusual is one which, like Machiyado Ichiryu, goes quite so modern in its furnishings — although the look is more subtle and sober than flashy. More typical is the presence of a geothermal spring, which feeds both the communal baths and the in-room onsen baths. And where there’s a ryokan, there’s a restaurant serving dishes meticulously crafted from seasonal local ingredients.
