About Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo
With a historic winery, a tasting room, a wine museum, an excellent restaurant, and an elegant boutique hotel, Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is a place to park the rental car and stay put for a few days. It’s one of the oldest wine estates in the Douro Valley — which is itself one of the world’s earliest known wine regions — and the proprietors perfected the place over time. The hotel occupies an 18th-century manor house overlooking terraced vineyards and the Douro River beyond. Outfitted in calming pastels and Portuguese antiques, rooms are peaceful and light-filled, and many have private terraces opening onto fragrant gardens. A traditional farm-to-table breakfast is served around a large wooden table in the winery house each morning, and the grounds feature a pretty pool, a small chapel, and quiet lounge spaces indoors and out, plus a trio of trailheads that invite scenic strolls in the surrounding hills.
