    About EN Japanese Brasserie

For two decades, 435 Hudson Street served as one of downtown Manhattan's most committed introductions to Japanese cuisine beyond sushi. EN Japanese Brasserie opened in 2004 under founder Reika Alexander and chef Abe Hiroki with a deliberate focus on the breadth of Japanese cooking: kaiseki-style tasting menus, house-made tofu that drew specific praise from Michelin, sashimi, and a sake and shochu program that ran long enough to anchor a serious evening at the bar alone.

The dining room made a case for itself architecturally as much as culinarily. A central tree anchored the space beneath high ceilings, the kitchen ran open, and the overall effect was spare rather than theatrical. That restraint carried through to the menu, where dishes like Saikyo miso black cod and house tofu were given room to register on their own terms. A dedicated vegan tasting menu called Nohara reflected an early and genuine engagement with plant-forward Japanese cooking at a time when few Western-facing Japanese restaurants were offering anything comparable.

The West Village address placed EN in a neighborhood that, for most of its run, had little direct competition at the same tier. That relative isolation helped cement its status as a two-decade fixture for a cross-section of downtown regulars, artists, and visiting names including Karl Lagerfeld, Lou Reed, and Sofia Coppola. The restaurant functioned less as a destination for a single celebrated dish and more as a reliable anchor for the kind of extended, sake-driven dinner that the izakaya format is built around.

EN Japanese Brasserie closed permanently in December 2024, ending a twenty-year run that introduced kaiseki sensibility and izakaya informality to New York diners who had grown accustomed to equating Japanese dining with omakase counters and high-end sushi. Its closure leaves a specific gap in the West Village: a spacious, unhurried Japanese dining room with genuine range across the menu and a beverage program serious enough to carry the evening on its own.
