About La Maison de Rhodes
The town of Troyes remained mercifully intact during World War II, preserving an abundance of half-timbered buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. They’re a bunch of Johnny-come-latelys compared to La Maison de Rhodes. The foundation of this eleven-room hotel in the heart of the historical district can be traced back to the 12th century when it housed the Knights Templar. Fully restored in 1998, the hotel acknowledges its history by incorporating original flagstones and Burgundy stone floors along with a pitch-perfect recreation of the half-timbered edifice. Even taking into account an infusion of modern conveniences, La Maison de Rhodes feels sturdy, ageless, and a little bit mystical. The interior is no storybook fantasy, just meticulously restored, spacious, and full of exposed beams that echo the exterior design. It’s actually pretty understated for a hotel in the Champagne region of France, many of which are just as virtuosic in their restoration, but aren’t content to stop at the limits of taste. Here, the designers are confident enough to let the imposing stone hearths and minimal, well-placed wooden furniture speak for itself. Bathrooms enhance the uncluttered feel while unifying the design; generously sized bathtubs and big tiled showers are installed beneath slanted ceilings, with the occasional bit of stained glass providing accompaniment. Outside, the courtyard serves as a summer breakfast spot, while the hotel’s La Commanderie restaurant serves local dishes paired with regional wine. Make no mistake, this is gourmet dining — “local dishes” in northern France being what they are — and the cuisine is a perfect match for the elegant surroundings. How to get there: La Maison de Rhodes is located approximately 90 minutes (by car) from Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport in Paris. If coming by train, the hotel is a short 15-minute walk from the Troyes railway station. Please contact CustomerService@TabletHotels.com for questions or assistance with airport transfers.
