More than a few European boutique hotels are made from what were once private aristocratic residences; what sets Palazzo Arone apart is that it’s still tended to by its original owners, the Baroni di Valentino — a fact that likely accounts in large part for the extremely fine condition of this 16th-century palazzo, set in the heart of historic Palermo. The sense of continuity with the house’s past is everywhere in evidence; historical flourishes are plentiful, and the ornate interiors are punctuated by carefully judged contemporary interventions, including modern design furniture and up-to-date boutique-hotel comforts. And while even the humblest Classic room feels luxurious, Palazzo Arone’s suites are among the most impressive in town. And while there’s no typical hotel-style restaurant or bar, guests are by no means on their own — a sunset aperitif is often accompanied by live music, and a chef is on hand for dinner, market tours, and cooking classes.
