About Quinta Jardins do Lago
In the hills above the city center, facing Funchal Bay and the Atlantic Ocean stands an 18th-century house that was home, during the Napoleonic Wars, to the British general William Carr Beresford. By the year 2000 it was operating as a luxury hotel, and today Quinta Jardins do Lago is one of Madeira’s most desirable addresses. It’s been improved in countless ways since its founding, of course, but the atmosphere of a Madeira manor house remains splendidly intact. The rooms and suites are generously sized and look out over the property’s spectacular gardens; some also feature distant views of the valley, the city and the sea. The formal dining room is named for General Beresford, and is joined by the Colombo Bistro, a cocktail bar and a poolside bar.
