Though this splendid old edifice has recently celebrated its 150th birthday, by local standards La Villa Guy is still practically brand new. Béziers is one of France’s oldest cities, dating back to pre-Roman times, and La Villa Guy is uniquely located in a one-hectare park right in the city center, a designated historic monument with an Andalusian aesthetic and a Moorish-inspired garden. As for the hotel, it’s as unusual as its setting: just six rooms and suites, plus a pair of lounges, a bar, a billiards room and library, a swimming pool, and even a balcony and rotunda with a commanding view of the park. Its proprietors, Les Collectionneurs, are responsible for a number of distinctive, historic boutique-style hotels, and they’ve made great theater of this one. The rooms and suites all mix contemporary boldness with classic romance in varying proportions; there’s not a square inch of this place that is without visual interest. And the visual isn’t the only sense that’s catered to: there’s a spa that, though small, is as lavish as those you’d find in a much larger luxury hotel.
