About Volve Hotel Bangkok
While Thailand in general and Bangkok in particular are world-renowned travel destinations, the capital city’s hotel scene has largely been dominated by big luxury hotels — some global brands, some homegrown. Volve Hotel Bangkok, then, is an outlier: a boutique hotel of just 28 rooms, where the scale is small, the welcome is personal, and the design is thoughtful, mixing contemporary-luxe elements with unique commissioned artworks and a touch of the whimsy that’s essential for making a hotel look stylish but not too precious. The name is short for “evolve,” so they’re conscious about changing Bangkok’s boutique-hotel game. The design is inspired by the mid-century architecture and design of the neighborhood, Thong Lor, and the hotel is furnished with period furniture, as well as modern pieces — some made from salvaged elements, like the lobby’s table, built from parts of a staircase from the house that once stood on this spot. Also refreshingly down-to-earth is the hotel’s café and restaurant, the former serving coffee grown and roasted in Thailand and the latter specializing in a cuisine that’s hyper-local and hyper-specific — a selection of classic Western dishes, as interpreted by Chinese restaurateurs in 20th-century Bangkok. Safe to say it’s not what you probably expect — but nor is it something you’ll soon forget.
