Each category answers a different question about hospitality. A family-hotel honor, chef award or lifetime achievement should retain its original meaning instead of being converted into an overall numerical rank. Falstaff publishes restaurant ratings, thematic selections and category awards. These are different formats. Its restaurant score allocates up to 50 points to food, 20 to service, 20 to wine and 10 to style. A restaurant score printed beside a wine-list selection is not a separate score for the cellar, and an editorial special award is not another points tier. The special-award announcement does not supply a single numerical formula that can be applied across all its categories.
