About Sound View Greenport
You could be forgiven for thinking the Hamptons were all there is out there at the far end of Long Island, but you’d still be wrong. The island’s North Fork runs in parallel to the south side, with its usual haunts, and if you follow it just about as far as you can go you’ll soon end up at Sound View Greenport, a Fifties motel that’s been restored, rehabilitated, and given the boutique-hotel treatment by Studio Tack, a Brooklyn-based design firm. The inspiration for the style was New England’s modernist heritage, which means Sound View comes by its visual identity honestly. It’s a refreshingly mature look, and lends just the right amount of gravity to the experience. The details are carefully chosen, and the rooms, while never crossing over into luxury-hotel opulence, are more than comfortable enough. And while North Fork is a bit on the quiet side — complete with a quarter-mile of private beach — Sound View has plenty of social life built in. There’s a lobby lounge and a library, as well as a piano bar, featuring some impressive live acts — and the Halyard serves classic Northeastern fare featuring local seafood and produce, under the direction of a James Beard Award–winning chef.
