It takes a truly unusual hotel design to surprise us these days, but DongFengYun Hotel Mi’Le - MGallery is nothing if not unusual. It’s just one part of the larger Dong Feng Yun Art Village mixed-use arts and culture complex, designed by the sculptor Luo Xu in a style that feels ancient and futuristic at the same time — its curving forms lend it an organic quality, and its red brick construction, apparently, contains no steel bars or even nails. Underneath it all, naturally, is a proper luxury boutique hotel, one whose 232 rooms and suites are outfitted with high-end comforts and decorated in a comparatively sedate style, though the floor plans do occasionally indulge in some unusual geometry, in accordance with the curves of the buildings themselves. Some feature walk-in rain showers, others deep soaking tubs, and the views of the lake, the forest, and the mountains are inspiring. Restaurants include the casual Shake Lobby Lounge and Huijin Chinese Restaurant, an upscale Cantonese/Yunnan concept. Xuan Bar is the spot for afternoon tea as well as cocktails, wine, and whiskeys, and the Pu Bar sits by the side of the hotel’s expansive outdoor swimming pool.
