It’s not quite an urban boutique hotel, but for Costa Rica, it’s close: Santarena Hotel makes its home not on some isolated hillside or some purpose-built resort compound, but in the car-free center of the town of Las Catalinas, on the Pacific coast. It’s contemporary in style, but not aggressively modern — it’s inspired by colonial-era mansion architecture, and offers the welcome combination of splendid in-room seclusion and, in its common spaces, a convivial social life. Rooms and suites are more than comfortable enough, but stop short of anything ostentatious; most come with balconies or gardens, and some open onto impressive sea views, while a shared rooftop terrace features a swimming pool and a shaded lounge area. The signature Mediterranean restaurant opens onto a ground-floor terrace, and is joined by a lobby bar and a second, more casual restaurant and bakery. It’s a remarkably self-sufficient stay, but there’s also plenty of opportunity to get out and about: the town, the beach, and the surrounding countryside all call....
