About Taj Connemara\u002c Chennai
Quite probably the oldest hotel in Chennai — and certainly its oldest luxury hotel — the Taj Connemara, needless to say, has seen some history. Over the course of a century and a half it’s played host to the upper echelons of local society, and it’s only fitting that today it flies the flag of India’s venerable Taj Hotels. For all its history, though, what was once the Imperial Hotel has also seen some changes: its continual evolutions included work by the Sri Lankan modernist master architect Geoffrey Bawa, and its current incarnation dates back only to 2018, following a two-year renovation. It’s a top-tier business hotel, with all of the services and amenities that implies — but without the bland décor that haunts too many of its competitors. Here the look is beautifully authentic, even ornate, retaining just enough of its regal past to cast a distinguished light on its contemporary luxury style. For less industrious pursuits, the Jiva Spa is on hand to offer relaxation, and the dining and drinking options include the traditional Raintree, the Anglo-Indian Verandah, and the posh-as-can-be Lady Connemara Bar & Lounge. And just as ever, when you’re here you’re surrounded by a who’s-who of Chennai’s leading lights.
