The space is the main reason to visit: a broad, airy bakery-café with high ceilings, a patisserie counter running one side of the room, and enough breathing space to actually hold a conversation. If you are choosing between Albion and a slicker Soho option for a birthday brunch or a relaxed business breakfast, Albion's spatial generosity and direct Britishness make it the more comfortable call.

About Albion

Albion occupies the ground floor of the Boundary development on Boundary Street, E2, and has been a fixture in this part of east London long enough to predate most of what surrounds it. The format is a British café and bakery: counter service for pastries and bread, table service for fuller meals, and a retail shelf running alongside the kitchen output. The room itself is the centrepiece. Where many Shoreditch venues trade on low light and tight seating to manufacture intimacy, Albion does the opposite. The layout is open and relaxed, which makes it a better fit for two people who want to talk, or a small group celebrating something, than for anyone chasing a cocktail-bar atmosphere.

For spirit-led drinking, Albion is not your destination. The drinks list is functional rather than specialist, and if a considered gin, whiskey, or mezcal programme is what you are after, you will be better served heading to 69 Colebrooke Row or A Bar with Shapes For a Name nearby. Albion's strength is in its food and its room, not its bar programme.

Booking is easy. Walk-ins are generally possible outside peak weekend brunch hours, and the venue accommodates small groups without the choreography required at tighter east London spots.
