There are just a handful of places to stay in Barr, a quaint village on the Alsace Wine Trail. The 5 Terres Hotel & Spa, part of the MGallery Hotel Collection, is one of them, and it’s everything you’d want of a hotel in such a picturesque setting. It’s right in the center of town, steps away down a cobblestoned street from the town hall and the tourist information office. The half-timbered 16th-century building is a historic landmark — it was once used as a factory and later a brewery — and though traditional from the outside, with its cheerful wooden shutters and window boxes spilling over with bright flowers, the interiors have been smartly redone with a modern edge. Rooms and suites are atmospheric, with exposed wooden beams or steeply angled ceilings, pale oak flooring, original stone and brick details, leather headboards, and velvet accents. The upper-level Signature Suite has a private terrace with views over the vineyards. Downstairs, a stylish gourmet restaurant and a trio of attractive spaces await wine enthusiasts: a lively bar, a restored conservatory, and a pretty plant-lined terrace. A level beneath that, the building’s old sandstone vaults have been converted into an ethereal spa with indoor pools framed by stone archways — arguably the most striking area of the hotel, it’s not to be missed.
