It’s hard to imagine a hotel more steeped in Basque culture and history than Hotel Nafarrola Gastronomy & Wine. Occupying an old stone farmhouse outside the village of Bermeo, this eight-suite property is set amid the region’s famous green hills and sheep pastures. The hotel is owned and operated by a pair of brothers who work with local farmers, artisans, and winemakers to stock everything from the all-natural soaps in the bathrooms to the one-of-a-kind ceramics on the breakfast table and the selection of Txakoli in the wine cellar. The interiors have been updated with sustainability and simplicity in mind. Rooms and suites feature charmingly rustic original details — exposed stone walls, sloping wood-beamed ceilings — and a minimalist sensibility. Standard rooms are spacious and character-filled with clean lines, bright whites, pale wood Scandinavian-inspired furniture, and standalone soaking tubs. Larger rooms come with private terraces, wood-burning stoves, and Jacuzzis, and suites have skylights for stargazing. Hotel Nafarrola’s farm-to-table restaurant is a fine choice for dining between hikes, bicycle excursions, and touring the Basque wine country.
