Though easily reached by ferry from Vancouver or Victoria, Salt Spring Island feels remote indeed. The artistic community of Ganges is a charming small town, and just a few minutes’ walk from the town center is Hastings House Country House Hotel, which feels for all the world like an English country-house luxury hotel transported to British Columbia’s Gulf Islands. It stands on 22 acres of land with views over Ganges Harbour, and contains a mere 18 rooms and suites, which makes for a tranquil atmosphere. The accommodations range from substantial standard rooms to expansive suites, as well as the three-bedroom Churchill Family Cottage. Spa services are available inside a converted barn, and in the house’s restaurant a Swiss chef puts his European training to work on seasonal British Columbia ingredients.
