Its name is a mouthful, to be sure, but not a word is wasted: Valcastello Dolomites Chalet & Polo Club is everything it claims to be. Most immediately apparent, obviously, are the jagged peaks of the Dolomites, an unmistakable backdrop. But the chalet business is no exaggeration, either — it’s a rare Alpine hotel indeed whose interiors venture quite so far in the direction of aristocratic opulence. The chateau itself is of 19th-century vintage, and its interiors reflect that heritage with the utmost fidelity: ornate woodwork, fine fabrics, and period artworks abound. The fact that there are a mere eight suites and apartments contributes to the sense of secluded privacy, and the common spaces — a series of living and dining rooms — are nearly as plentiful as the accommodations. And while you’d think a polo club might get little use in this mountain climate, you’ve likely failed to consider the possibility of snow polo — at Valcastello they play on grass during the summer months, and snow during from December through March. Just another reminder that Valcastello isn’t your ordinary Dolomites chalet — though it’s worth remembering that if the polo ponies aren’t your thing, you’ve still got all the traditional Alpine diversions right at your feet.
