Many of Puglia’s grand old palazzi have been converted into hotels, a trend that’s especially noticeable in Lecce. Among the best is Palazzo Maresgallo Suites & Spa, an art- and design-focused boutique hotel housed in a 16th-century palace near the Baroque cathedral. A Parisian architect-art collector couple fell in love with the place — with its elegant stone archways, quiet courtyard, and walled gardens, it’s not hard to see why — and personally oversaw its restoration. The finishing touch was the curation of the hotel’s first-rate art collection, including hand-painted frescoes, antique marble sculptures, and murals by the Italian painter Roberto Ruspoli. Highlights include a secret garden with a plunge pool and a rooftop terrace with views over the Roman amphitheater and the Duomo’s bell tower.
