About La Mission
An old army barracks later turned into a school is an unlikely setting for a luxury hotel, but Hotel La Mission pulls off the transformation with panache. It’s located on L’Île d’Yeu, a laid-back island just off the west coast of France, with seven low-lying buildings arranged like a cloister around a central garden — once a schoolyard — with a century-old plane tree and a heated swimming pool. There’s a nostalgic air to the rooms and suites, with pale wainscoting, cheerful patterns, and antique pieces that channel the owners’ childhood. Kid-friendly details like bunk beds are fun for families, and the grounds feature pétanque courts and in July and August, a food truck specializing in crêpes. After pedaling down to the beach on one of the hotel’s rental bikes, climb up to the retro-styled rooftop bar for apéritifs with views of the nearby Saint-Sauveur bell tower.
